To Cork Or Not to Cork

Whether you’re fishing for bluegills, shellcrackers (redeared sunfish) or crappie, there’s one question that’s often in the back of your mind. Do I need to use a bobber (cork) or not? Years ago, when anglers all fished with river-bottom cane because there were no graphite poles, the answer was quite simple: use a cork. The cork or bobber performs two functions. The primary purpose of the float is as a strike indicator. When the cork goes down, you know you have a fish on the line. The other purpose of a cork is to suspend the bait at a certain depth where you think the fish are feeding. However, a cork also has two major drawbacks. A cork stops the bait as it falls toward the bottom, causing the bait to suspend, and it offers resistance to the line when the fish takes the bait into its mouth. So, many times the fish will feel the resistance on the line and spit-out the bait.
